Born in Victoria in 1944, Darryl E. Muralt grew in the nearby Highlands District and had a career in the Canadian Army until he was injured in a motor vehicle accident and hospitalized for ten years. His interest in model railroading and railroad history has led to three books, Steel Rails & Silver Dreams; West Coast Shays; and most recently V&S: The Victoria and Sidney Railway 1892-1919 (BC Railway Historical Association, 1992; Sono Nis ISBN 0-9692511-1-4). Muralt moved to Victoria after his medical discharge from the army in 1973. He joined the B.C. Railway Historical Assocation in 1975 and later served as its president.
