Patrick (Paddy) Smith holds a Ph.D in Government and is Director of the Institute of Governance--and the past Chair/Professor of Political Science and of Gratuate Urban Studies--at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. He has served on the national board of the Canadian Political Science Association and the Institute of Public Administration of Canada, as well as founding President of the BC Political Studies Association. He has authored /edited more than a dozen books and more than 75 related articles. He contributed a chapter to The Rise of Cities: Montréal, Toronto, Vancouver and Other Cities (Black Rose, 2017)  in which contributors present analyses on how cities coalesce, develop and thrive, and how they can be remade to better serve the lifeblood of all cities. It also includes  essays on urban activism in Barcelona and Madrid.
