Also new from an oldtimer, Vic Phillips' first full-length fictional foray, Dortland (Harbour $12.95), opens with a raid on the Capilano Salmon Hatchery, which leads to a brawl behind a North Van bar, which leads to the knifing of an Italian gangster at a sockeye potlatch beneath the Lions Gate Bridge. Raucous and irreverent, the adventures of Steve Dortland nonethless realistically reflect the toughness of North Van during the 1950s.
