Rentoul was an Australian who was born in Ireland. According to historian Chuck Davis, his second collection of poetry describes Vancouver the city and Vancouver the man, including some historical information on George Vancouver. There are also poems of World War One such as 'Landing of the Australians at Gaba Tepe, Gallipoli', 'Anzac - Not in Vain!' and 'Neuve Chapelle'. Using the pseudonym Gervais Gage, Rentoul had previously published From Far Lands: Poems of North and South (London: Macmillan, 1914). Rentoul was the father of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite (June 9, 1888 - 1960), an Australian illustrator of children's books.
