Shipwreck historian Fred Rogers was born in Vancouver in 1919 and raised in the Trout Lake area of Grandview. As a boy he explored Haney, Coquitlam and Surrey on a bicycle. He joined the Alpine Club in the late 1940s and climbed to the summit of Mt. Baker. His 20 years of research for Shipwrecks of British Columbia in 1973 resulted in a B.C. bestseller that chronicles more than 100 shipwrecks and their discoveries. His 1992 follow-up volume is More Shipwrecks of British Columbia. He also wrote Southern Vancouver Island Hiking Trails (Heritage House, 1995).
