Ginny Russell is the author of the young adult novels Voices on the Bay (Beach Holme, 1993) and Step by Step (Beach Holme, 1996). She taught primary grades in Ontario before moving to British Columbia. She has lived in Japan and Australia but sets her stories in Canadian locations. Her cottage on Mayne Island is the locale for Voices on the Bay. She is a member of CWILL BC, a group of professional writers and illustrators who meet regularly to discuss the children's literature and promote it within the province. Russell is currently working on her third young adult novel and a picture book and enjoys reading at schools and libraries.

The atmosphere of B.C. and the Gulf Islands comes alive in Voices on the Bay, the story of a young boy who reluctantly comes from Toronto to the west coast to visit his grandparents on Mayne Island, in the Juan de Fuca Strait. Dave meets an elder of the Saanich Natives, Thaa,wen, who tells him stories about his people's history, the raiding parties and ambushes. With Rick, his new friend, Dave discovers an old Native midden and attempts a recreation of a fishing raid.
