After high school and restaurant training, Schmidt-Ostrander enrolled at the R. Virchow Hospital school of dietetics. After graduating with honours in 1956, she immigrated to Canada. She worked as a nanny before getting married and raised her own three children. After her grandchildren were born, she told them stories and then wrote them down. Her book, The Six Frogs, contains seven of the stories she wrote for her grandchildren, great-grand children and friends.

She is also a certified American Orchid Society judge.
