A former newspaper editor and publisher, Gord Smedley earned a Journalistic Principles scholarship to Vancouver College (Langara), an Excellence in Outdoor Writing award from the BC & Yukon Community Newspaper Association, and an Honourable Mention at the BC Law Society awards in 1989. As a freelance writer he has interviewed Noam Chomsky and produced a five-part series on spousal assault. He enjoys reading, fishing, cooking and politics. His story for young readers Grades 4 and up Orcas Calling (Harbour, 1994) in which 13-year-old Alicia from Vanderhoof visits her aunt and uncle in Prince Rupert where she encounters whales and mermaids.
