When Falcons Fly (Poppy Productons, 2007) by Manitoba author David Square recalls the first Olympic gold hockey team, the Winnipeg Falcons, a group of mainly Icelandic youths who, after returning from fighting in World War I, won the first Olympic gold medal for hockey in Antwerp in 1920. The captain of the team, Frank
Fredrickson, moved to BC and led the Victoria Cougars to a Stanley Cup victory (one of only two for BC) and he coached the UBC Thunderbirds to the Hamber Cup in 1950. He also served as a city councilor in Vancouver. Parts of the proceeds from the book are going to the B.C. based Kelty Patrick Foundation. [The book launch in Vancouver at Book Warehouse on September 30, 2007 included Frank Fredrickson's son and Heather Ireland, BC's honorary consul general for Iceland.]
