As a college teacher of history, Lee Stewart, born in 1944, produced Women Volunteer To Go To Prison: A History of the Elizabeth Fry Society of B.C. 1939-1989 (Orca, 1993). The venerable organization is named after a Quaker who was one of the first women to become active in prison reform in England in the early 1800s. A group of Vancouver women organized the society in the early 1900s when they became concerned about the welfare of female prisoners at Oakalla Prison Farm in B.C.
