Born in Digby, Nova Scotia, Walter Theriault of Campbell River has outlined the outset of his long career as a commercial fisherman on the east coast of Canada with Fire on Board (AuthorHouse 2009), a self-published memoir, styled as a novel, set in the latter half of the 1950s in the Bay of Fundy. Fire broke out on board during his second voyage, when he was fifteen. With no lifeboats or firefighting equipment, he survived in the cold Atlantic for an hour, clinging to a hatch cover, until he was rescued.
