Before founding the publishing company Leaf Press in 2001, Ursula Vaira worked at Oolichan Books for ten years. Her first book, And See What Happens (Caitlin, 2011) is a collection of three poetic stories about the west coast of Canada. The first story is based on her thirty-day paddle from Hazelton to Victoria to raise awareness of addictions on the coast and to raise money to build a healing centre open to all people. In 2019, the Federation of BC Writers asked her to become the new editor of their magazine WordWorks distributed to more than 700 writers around B.C.
