Richard Vission left Chicago in the 1970s and lived and wrote in the Kootenays for the next 35 years. After a six-year interlude in China, he moved back to B.C. The Foundations of Kindness is about his youth when he and a group of other revolutionaries took on the Chicago Democratic Party machine with disastrous consequences. He wrote the first part of the memoir while living in British Columbia's mountains. Between 2014 and 2019, he wrote the 'logues (prologue, dialogues, epilogues). Vission dedicated the book to, "the memory of Fred Hampton, assassinated by the FBI and the Chicago Police December 4, 1969."
