Info
A smiling picture of "Sunshine Sue" went into every family pack of Dad's Cookies in the 1930s.
"Sunshine Sue" was Sue Ward. By the time she was 20, Ward had made a name for herself writing songs, performing commercials and doing radio spots on CJOR. At 29, in 1942, Ward signed up with Canadian Womens Army Corps.
One Gal's Army (Caitlin $14.95) is Ward's account of life as one of the first female recruits in the regular Canadian Army, an important step for women's equality. But it was not the kind of step that Ward was anticipating.
As a well known entertainer she was expecting to entertain troops overseas. Instead, she got a four year course in human nature as she worked with the "gals" from Halifax to Prince Rupert. Now 84, Sue Ward lives in Quesnel.
