Two years prior to his death, David Wilkie received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Railroad Historical Association in 1996. Wilkie's first co-authored book with Robert Turner received the Canadian Railroad Historical Association's Book Award. The intense competition between the CPR, Great Northern and Kettle River Valley Railways in the southern mountains of B.C., during the copper mining boom of the late 1890s and early 1900s, is the focus for Steam Along the Boundary. Mines and smelters at Grand Forks, Greenwood, Phoenix, Castlegar, Keremeos, Hedley and Republic all arose during this lively period.
