Diane Maguire was born Diane Rose in Kingston, Jamaica in 1947. She lived in Cuba, England and the Bahamas before moving to Vancouver in 1980. She earned her master's degree in creative writing at UBC while editing Prism International, the creative writing department's literary quarterly. Her first collection of short stories, Dry Land Tourist and Other Stories (Sister Visioni Press, 1991), contains vignettes of sexual awakenings, conflicting loyalties and generational changes in a 'Jamaica white' family. She has taught writing part-time at Vancouver Community College.
