Born in Montreal in 1935, Jerry Newman joined UBC's Creative Writing faculty in 1971. We Always Take Care Of Our Own (M&S/Victor Gollancz, 1965) is his coming-of-age novel set in Montreal's Jewish community. A novel called A Russian Novel (New Press, Victor Gollancz, 1973) was modeled on the great Russian novels of the 19th century. It concerns a would-be biographer who unwittingly receives an illicit manuscript about the Soviet government, then loses it. His first book of poems is Sudden Proclamations (Cacanadadada, 1992).
