Ulli Steltzer's photography and Robert Bringhurst's text for The Black Canoe (1991) received the Bill Duthie Booksellers' Choice Award in 1992. Steltzer has also collaborated with writer Catherine Kerr for Coast of Many Faces (1979), which continued her concern for photographing people “in a culture gap.” Following two years in the Canadian Arctic she produced her comparable book Inuit: The North In Transition (1982), a follow-up to Building an Igloo (1981). Other Steltzer titles are Indian Artists at Work (1976), A Haida Potlatch (1984), The Eagle Transforming: The Art of Robert Davidson (1994) and The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: Bill Reid’s Masterpiece (1997). Steltzer was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1923 and emigrated to the U.S. in 1953. She moved to Vancouver in 1972.
