Born in British Columbia in 1922, Tom Sando was sent to live in Japan upon the premature death of his mother. Returning to Canada in 1938, he was interned in 1941 and remained in camps at Petawawa and Angler in Ontario for four years. He worked in the construction industry in Winnipeg and Edmonton for almost 30 years. His memoir of being a civilian prisoner is Wild Daisies in the Sand: Life in a Canadian Internment Camp (NeWest Press, 2002).
