Born in 1946, Okanagan band member Shirley Louis researched family trees and collected interviews with elders for Q'Sapi: A History of Okanagan People as told by Okanagan Families (Theytus, 2002). Q'Sapi means "long time ago." Her anthology provides documentation of Okanagan Indian Band veterans who served in World Wars I and II and suggests the Interior Salish were matrilineal. Archaeological evidence of indigenous people living in the Okanagan Valley corridor dates as far back as 6500 B.C.
