Born in Toronto in 1930, Bateman is one of Canada's most prolific painters. Originally interpreting nature using a variety of contemporary styles, including post-impressionism and abstract expressionism, he switched to a realism style in the 1960s and quickly began garnering critical acclaim. He is the author of numerous books of his art including Robert Bateman: Natural Worlds (Simon & Schuster, 1996). He lives in Saltspring Island.
