Nightwood Editions Buys Bluefield Books

Nightwood Editions is pleased to announce the purchase of Bluefield Books, including inventory and ongoing contracts, effective January 1, 2005.
Bluefield was started in 1999 by Julian Ross, who also founded Polestar Press and Polestar Calendars. Based in the small west-Kootenay town of Winlaw, BC, Bluefield created a select non-fiction line that included the bestselling O Canada Crosswords (Books 1 to 5) by Kathleen Hamilton and O Canada Crosswords for Kids (Books 1 and 2) by Ruth Porter and Jesse Ross. Together, the series has sold more than 145,000 copies.
Other popular titles include Soccer--Guarding the Goal by Shel Brödsgaard, Betty by Gary Delainey and Gerry Rasmussen and The Stanley Park Companion by Paul Grant and Laurie Dickson.
Nightwood Editions is located on the Sunshine Coast of BC and is under the direction of Publisher Silas White. The press has been publishing approximately eight books a year--many of them award-winning--with an emphasis on literary titles.
"We think Bluefield Books will be a great addition to Nightwood's list," says White. "Their strong trade sales will help to support our literary list."
Nightwood will assume the publication of Goals & Dreams: A Celebration of Canadian Woman's Soccer, by Shel Brödsgaard and Bob Mackin with an introduction by Andrea Neil, which was originally in development with Bluefield. It will be published in spring 2005.
Raincoast will accept Bluefield returns from January 1 to March 31, 2005. Nightwood Editions is distributed in Canada by Harbour Publishing and is represented to the trade by Kate Walker & Company. Harbour will accept orders immediately after December 31, 2004.
"I'm very happy that this sale is taking place," adds Ross. "Nightwood takes great care with their books, and I feel they'll be a good home for Bluefield's authors and titles. And with Kate Walker as their sales representatives, I'm convinced the transition will be smooth for booksellers as well."
