Wolfgang G. JILEK, Dr.med.; M.Sc.; M.A.; Dipl.Psych.; FRCP(C)
Dr Wolfgang Jilek was born 1930 of Austrian background, his father Dr Oskar Jilek, was Internist, his mother Elfriede, Red Cross Nurse.
Dr Wolfgang Jilek is Clinical Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada (Faculty member since 1974); and Affiliate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Washington, Seattle, USA. He holds degrees in Medicine (M.D., U. of Innsbruck, 1956), General Psychiatry (McGill U. Diploma 1965); Social Psychiatry (M.Sc., McGill U., Montreal,1966), and in Anthropology (M.A., UBC, Vancouver, 1972). He worked in psychiatric practice and community mental health services in rural and urban British Columbia 1966-2004; also providing psychiatric consultation to indigenous populations in the Fraser Valley and on the Pacific Northwest Coast.
In 1970 Dr Jilek founded the Canadian Psychiatric Association's Section on Native Peoples' Mental Health which he chaired until 1981. He is a founding member of the Transcultural Psychiatry Section of the World Psychiatric Association and was its Secretary 1983-1993 and Chairperson 1993-1999, organizing international cross-cultural symposia in several countries.
In the 1980s Dr Jilek served as Mental Health Consultant of the World Health Organization in Papua New Guinea, as Mental Health Advisor in Tonga, and as Refugee Mental Health Coordinator of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Thailand.
D Jilek's primary research interest is comparative cultural psychiatry, ethnopsychology, and ethnomedicine, in which fields he conducted investigations in E.Africa, Haiti, S. America, SE. Asia, Papua New Guinea, S. Pacific Islands, and among North American indigenous populations. Another interest is researching the semiotic and psychophysiologic aspects of symbols.
Dr Jilek has held 53 invited guest lectures at universities and institutes in North America, Europe, Mexico, South America, Asia and in Pacific countries. He has published three books and 134 scientific articles and book chapters. He is editorial advisor of scientific periodicals published in Canada, Mexico, and Germany. He is Hon. Advisor of the World Association of Cultural Psychiatry, Hon. Member of AGEM (Work Group Ethnomedicine, Germany); Hon. Member of GLADET (Ethnopsychiatry, Latin America).
Dr Jilek is married to Dr Louise Jilek-Aall, psychiatrist, anthropologist, and specialist in tropical medicine, Clinical Professor Emerita, UBC Vancouver. They have jointly worked in clinic, research, and publications, in Canada and overseas. Their daughter Martica Ilona Jilek, R.N., is clinical nurse at university affiliated hospitals.
