Born in 1737, the self-taught astronomer and mathematician William Bayly had served as an assistant in the Royal Observatory prior to sailing as an astronomer for Cook's second and third voyages. His work is incorporated into King's version of Cook's final voyage. He later edited his own calculations for a book. One of Malaspina's two Spanish astronomers, José Espinosa y Tello, likewise published Memorias sobre las observaciones astronómicas hechas por los navegantes espaáoles en distintos lugares del globo in 1809. Bayly was Headmaster of the Royal Navy Academy at Portsmouth from 1785 to 1807. He died in 1810. Several of his charts are displayed at the Vancouver Maritime Museum.
