Blakiston (1832-1891) was a Captain in the Royal Artillery who was also interested in ornithology. He connected with the Palliser expedition in the Rockies in 1858 and then set off to survey the Kootenay passes separately, publishing his Report on the Exploration of Two Passes (the Kootenae and Boundary Passes) of the Rocky Mountains in 1858. (Royal Artillery Institution, 1859). He then explored the upper Yangtze Kiang River in 1861 and worked as a merchant in Japan. He died in California.
