Born on August 6, 1969, in Vancouver, Damon Calderwood was always fascinated with nature and its beauty. Early experiences photographing reptiles, amphibians, and insects soon led him to discover birds and their fascinating world. He was educated at U.B.C., where he received degrees in Animal Biology and Education. When Calderwood met Don Waite, author of The Art of Photographing North American Birds, he began to learn how to photograph birds in flight using high-speed strobes. Don has mentored Calderwood since 1990, and has designed his first book, Flights of Fantasy: Photographing North American Birds.

A professional actor and teacher since 1995, Calderwood has worked for a variety of local theatre companies, including Bard on the Beach, Pacific Theatre, Theatre Under the Stars, Chemainus Theatre Festival, Wild Excursions Theatre, Kaleidoscope Theatre, The Gateway Theatre, and Garter Girl Theatre in the Yukon. He has won many awards over the years for his acting, most recently as Best Actor and Most Outstanding Performance for Dylan Thomas in Dylan at The Theatre B.C. North Shore Zone Festival in 2006. His real passion, however, is photographing birds in the wild and sharing the pictures with others.
