Michael Calvert of Nanaimo is a member of the Mid-Island Métis Nation. He graduated from Vancouver Island University's Creative Writing and Journalism program and also from the SFU Masters of Publishing program. He lives in Nanaimo and has taught at the Vancouver Island University since 2016, eventually becoming Chair of the Aboriginal University Bridging Program. The courses he has taught include First Peoples' Literature and Composition (ENGL 068), Indigenous Student Success and Study Strategies (STSK 038/068) and Indigenous Learning Recognition Portfolio (ILRP 100). His poetry, fiction and non-fiction have been published in various magazines. He won the Pat Bevan Award for fiction writing in 2012 and a Meadowlarks Award for a promising body of fiction work.
