Catherine Hunter, born in Regina in 1957, grew up in Winnipeg and moved to Victoria to study for an English doctorate at UVic. George Woodcock called her collection of poetry, Necessary Crimes, "one of the most interesting first books I have read in some time." She has been a leather worker, clam digger, doughnut-shop waitress, convenience store manager and carpet cleaner. She teaches English and Creative writing at the University of Winnipeg, and lives in St. Boniface, Manitoba.
