Home
Born of a Russian mother and a Polish father on July, 16, 1927 in Frankfurt, Germany, Inge Israel escaped with her parents to France. She grew up in France and Ireland, later living in Belgium and Denmark for eight years before coming to Edmonton in 1958. She moved to Victoria in 1996. Her parents had met in Siberia.
Israel has published nine books of fiction and poetry, in both French and English, winning various awards and being named Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Israel has written radio dramas and provided texts set to music. She has read her work in Japan, Germany, Austria, Denmark and the United States. She speaks for languages.
Rifts in the Visible is a bilingual collection about the life and art of expressionist painter Chaim Soutine, much admired by Modigliani.
In Beckett Soundings (Ronsdale, 2011), Israel examines the paradoxical life of playwright Samuel Beckett through a collection of poems.
Her reflective and emotionally-charged memoir Finding the Words (Seraphim 2016) recalls the events and people who shaped her life in many places all over the world.
