Touted as the definitive book on its subject, Haida Art (1997) by anthropologist George F. MacDonald of the Canadian Museum of Civilization is an overview based on the collection at the Ottawa/Hull museum where he was founding director. It contains almost 200 photos as a follow-up to his four previous Haida studies including Haida Monumental Art (1983), once described as the most important book published on Haida culture, and Haida Burial Practices: Three Archaeological Examples (1973). "From the first days of contact," he has stated, "the Haida tailored their production of art to European and American requirements." Also a past director of the Burke Museum in Seattle and the Melbourne Museum in Australia, MacDonald became president of the Bill Reid Foundation in 2004 and has overseen the creation of a Bill Reid Centre for Northwest Coast art studies at Simon Fraser University's downtown campus.

MacDonald has also published Chiefs of the Sea and Sky: Haida Heritage Sites of the Queen Charlotte Islands (1989) to discuss the southern villages of Skidegate, Haina, Cumshewa, Skedans, Tanu, Ninstints, Kaisun and Chaatl; as well as the northern villages of Masset, Kayang, Yan, Hiellan, Kung, Kiusta, Dadens, Yaku and Tian. "The earliest archaeological evidence of human habitation on the Queen Charlotte Islands has been dated to about 7,000 years ago," he writes, "although evidence from elsewhere on the north Pacific suggests the first settlement could have begun closer to 10,000 years ago." MacDonald also wrote Ninstints: Haida World Heritage Site (1983) and The Totem Poles and Monuments of Gitwangak Village (1984). He first contributed to 'KSAN: Breath of our Grandfathers (1972).
