Born in Shawville, Quebec on September 15, 1953, Christine Smart grew up mainly on an Ottawa Valley farm. Following her first book Coming Home (Rainbow Publishers, 2003), she has recalled her early life in decked and dancing (Hedgerow $16.95), a collection that also includes poems about illness, loss, grief, physical desire, love and motherhood, which was the winner of the Acorn-Plantos Award for Peoples Poetry in 2007. Having lived in Montreal, Edinburgh and Victoria, she moved to Saltspring Island in 1989.
Smart also published the poetry collection, The White Crow (Hedgerow, 2013)
