A British librarian, Hilton Smith came to Victoria and founded Adelphi Books, a bookstore on Fort Street in the early 1950s. He was an expert on Daniel Defoe and Robinson Crusoe. He compiled and wrote various catalogues and published his own collection of essays and talks entitled Northwestern Approaches: The First Century of Books (Victoria: Adelphi Book Shop Ltd. 1969).
