Stefan Dollinger wrote Creating Canadian English: The Professor, the Mountaineer, and a National Variety of English (Cambridge University Press, 2019) about the making of Canadian English. His book traces the conceptual, social and linguistic developments of Canadian English from the twentieth century to the present. It is a history of the discovery, codification, and eventual acceptance of Canadian English, as well as the contribution of the linguists behind it. Through a combination of new data and re-interpretations of existing studies, a new voice is given to earlier generations of forgotten Canadian linguists who shaped Canadian English and how we think about it.

Dollinger presents an account of developments spanning over almost a century that:

  • Explains how 'Canadian English' was established as a positive notion.

  • Covers a wide range of topics, including linguistic description, codification, dictionary making, linguistic imperialism, linguistic attitudes, language and Canadian identity, or the threat of Americanization.

  • Reveals in a longitudinal archival case study the negative effects of trends and fashions in the field of linguistics.

Stefan Dollinger is Associate Professor of English, and Associate Professor of Linguistics at UBC.
