Adam Thom (1820-1890) was born and educated as a lawyer in Scotland, then he went to Canada where he worked as a teacher, newspaper editor, government commissioner, and magistrate. In his biased treatise he argued in favour of British claims to the Oregon Territory by using "materials furnished by the Americans themselves."

Thom, Adam. The Claims to the Oregon Territory Considered (London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1844).
