A Cree author raised in Saskatchewan and Alberta, Beth Cuthand teaches at the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology in Merritt with a degree in Creative Writing from the University of Arizona. Her poetry books are Horse Dance to Emerald Mountain (1987) and Voices in the Waterfall (1989); her bilingual children's book, in Cree and English, is The Little Duck / Sikihpsis (Theytus, 1999), illustrated by Mary Longman. In 1982, she wrote, "Politics not law will ultimately determine the future of the First Nations in Canada. Whether we will continue to exist as distinct internally sovereign peoples within the Canadian confederation or acquiense to the relentless movement to assimilate us into the settler society of Canada, is the quintessential question raised by the patriation of the Canadian Constitution." She has co-edited Reinventing the Enemy's Language: Contemporary Native Women's Writings of North America (1997) and Gatherings Volume V: The En'owkin Journal of First North American Peoples (1994).
