Deirdre Simon Dore is a Canadian novelist, short fiction writer, playwright, and poet and practices art. She authored A Reluctant Mother (Ronsdale $25.95) about Frida, an artist who is childless by choice. Then she agrees to allow her husband’s spurious daughter into their lives leading to devastating events. Frida tells her story while confined to a hospital bed where a very young lawyer relentlessly pushes for a recounting of events. Frida’s memory, though often faulty and sporadic, comes back to her in poignant scenes that she is forced to relive, each alarming act leading to yet another even more ill-advised. Described in publicity as "a contemporary novel of a woman whose relationships are an exercise in hilarity and tragedy both."

Originally from New York and a graduate of Boston University, Deirdre Simon Dore has an MFA in creative writing from UBC. From homesteading on a remote BC island to forestry and cattle work in the interior she has made BC her permanent home. She lives near a large lake in the Kootenays with her husband, black lab and assorted livestock. She has two children.
